A winning submission for ‘London Revealed’ – a Fantasy High Street Project for Team London Bridge – ‘London Calling’ debuted at Potters Field Park nestled between Tower Bridge and the Mayor of London’s City Hall. The installation presents a piece of formally loved street furniture that has been abandoned and become practically obsolete. Seizing the opportunity to inhabit, flora has revealed a new purpose. Reclaimed by nature, the phone box creates a micro growing climate, providing a home to plants and a platform for a new public seat fashion from it’s former door.
The design is inspired by the various imaginative ways that the phone box has been repurposed in recent years, from library’s, micro business kiosks and the world’s smallest night club in Berlin. The red phone box was one of the most iconic pieces of street furniture in the UK and with the decline in their usage, we have a opportunity to re-think their use innovatively – here we create a new form of green infrastructure, which happens to be painted red.
The phone box is now situated at Great Maze Pond, London Bridge, opposite Guy’s Hospital. The installation invites people to interact with it, have a seat, take a photo and SMILE!
